IRGC disposes of bodies in unmarked graves in Deir Ezzor desert: report

Dec 20, 2020

Media in Deir Ezzor province have reported that Iran’s so-called ‘Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ (IRGC) has been disposing of unidentified bodies in unmarked graves near the village of Al-Suwayyah, with the report stating that numerous bodies have been secretly buried in this way in the desert areas in the province.

Deir Ezzor 24 reported that the militias have buried a significant number of bodies in the same way in various areas, with analysts suggesting that this confirms Iran’s regime is trying to downplay the number of deaths amongst the ranks of its affiliated militias.

The report suggests that the bodies buried in these unmarked graves probably belong to members of Iran’s foreign militias killed in fighting in the area, particularly to Pakistani and Afghan nationals, with a number of IRGC personnel and affiliated militia members killed in the region following attacks by various parties. Among those recently killed there was a senior Hezbollah official, Ali Ballout, who died of injuries sustained in fighting in Albukamal on the Syrian-Iraqi border.
